Mahalath/Mahala Norman was born in 1842 in Colchester, Essex, England – the daughter of John Norman, a bricklayer, and Ann Nevard.
She came to New Zealand and she married John Ross, a farmer, on 26 March 1870 in Knox Church, Dunedin.
They had no children but adopted a daughter later in life.
Mahala signed the petition in Invercargill but she is shown in the electoral rolls as living in South Hillend.
John died at their home in Invercargill in 1907 and Mahala died on 4 August 1924, they are buried together in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
