Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Maitland Smart Weston was born about 1830 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland – the daughter of Robert Weston, a carpenter, and Jean Calde.
Maitland emigrated to Otago in 1861 on the Melbourne and she married James Cowan Millar, a farmer, on 6 April 1864 in the Waihola Parish, south of Dunedin.
They had three children, one who died in infancy, and when Maitland signed the suffrage petition they were living in Outram on the Taieri Plains.
James died at North Taieri in 1903, he is buried in the West Taieri Cemetery.
Maitland died on 1 August 1907 at North East Valley, Dunedin.
She is presumably buried with James although this is not shown in the cemetery records.
