Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
This appears to be Mary Agnes Canning.
She was born in 1870 in Green Island – the daughter of Alfred Canning, a farmer, and Ellen Irvine. (See 83 Ellen Canning).
Mary’s father died suddenly in 1878 and when she signed the suffrage petition, she was living with her widowed mother in Green Island working as a tailoress. Mary married, carpenter, George Henry Strong on 18 December 1899 in Dunedin.
They had no children, and they later went to live in Timaru.
Mary died at their home on 22 March 1947, and George died later that year in December – they are buried in the Timaru Cemetery.
