Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Angell was born in England about 1862. In 1880 she came to Dunedin on the Dunbritton with her husband William, a carpenter, and two step children. After their arrival they had another three children.

In 1884 William applied for a patent for an improved washing machine and three years later he took over a venetian blind and revolving shutter works.

In 1893 William was declared bankrupt. That same year Margaret applied for a patent for 'an appliance for hanging up and securing hats and other articles'. This was so unusual that it was worthy of a mention in the newspaper.

Margaret and William moved to Waimate in South Canterbury in the 1910s. Margaret ran the 'Eclipse Outfitters' selling ladies and children’s wear.

William died in 1921 and Margaret died on 29 October 1936. They are buried together in the Waimate Cemetery.
