Margaret Bland Muir was born in 1870 in New Zealand – the daughter of Thomas Bland Muir and Isabella Bennett Morrison.

She grew up in Kaitangata in South Otago and she married James Bennie, a labourer, in 1892.

They had five children and Margaret signed the suffrage petition in Kaitangata.

James died in Balclutha in June 1946 and Margaret died later that year at her son’s home in Kaitangata on 5 November – they are buried in the Kaitangata Cemetery.
