Margaret Donoghue/O’Donoghue was born about 1855 in County Cork, Ireland.
She emigrated to Otago with her brother Thomas in 1875 on the Waimea and the following year she married widower William Heenan.
William was a farmer with four young children – Margaret had a further seven children and they farmed at Maungatua above the Taieri Plains.
William died in 1892 and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition she was still at Maungatua.
She died on 2 March 1920 and is buried with William in the West Taieri Cemetery.
