Margaret was born about 1850 in Ireland.

She married Bryan Hickey, a shoemaker, and they had three children before they emigrated to Otago in 1875 on the Earl of Zetland

They settled in Dunedin where they had a further four children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Linden in Roslyn.

In 1899, while Bryan was working in Naseby, he was committed to Seacliff Asylum suffering from senile dementia.

He was later transferred to Orokonui Home near Waitati where he died in 1928 – his burial place is unknown.

Margaret remained in Dunedin, she died on 6 August 1931 and is buried with two of her children in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
