Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Jane Hardie was born in 1876 in Dunedin – the daughter of John Hardie, a hotel keeper, and Margaret Frew.

Her mother died in 1882 and the following year her father re-married to Fanny Collins. (See 51 Mrs Jones).

Margaret’s father died in 1888 and later that year she left school - her stepmother was unable to look after the family and her younger sister was admitted to the Caversham Industrial School. Margaret signed the suffrage petition at St Clair.

She married baker Earnest Edward Grimmett on 25 March 1896 – they had three children, one who died in infancy.

The family lived in Dunedin, Waimate, Nelson and Wellington before returning to Dunedin where Margaret died on 28 October 1922 – she is buried with her parents in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.

Earnest remarried the following year – he died in 1958 and was cremated.
