Margaret McCarthy was born about 1860 in Ireland.
She emigrated to New Zealand where she married, 26-year-old, Christopher Keenan in September 1875, in Dunedin.
Margaret was aged 15 at the time of her marriage and her mother, also called Margaret, gave consent.
Margaret and Christopher had 11 children and the were living in Anderston in the suburb of Roslyn when she signed the suffrage petition.
Christopher died in 1915 and Margaret died at her home on 15 September 1919 – they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
