Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Margaret Sarah Speedie was born about 1852, probably in Scotland.

She came to New Zealand where, on 23 March 1877, “Margaret Sarah Speedie, eldest daughter of the late Matthew Speedie, Commercial Inn, Newburgh” married coal merchant John King in Dunedin.

This is not correct as Matthew Speedie’s eldest daughter Margaret was born in 1829 and she died in Victoria, Australia in 1891.

Margaret and John had four children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in George Street.

Margaret died on 13 December 1919 and John died in 1924 – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
