Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Langmuir was born on 26 June 1842 in Moffat, Dumfries & Galloway in Scotland – the daughter of William Johnston and Elizabeth Dickson.

She came to New Zealand with her family in the late 1850s and they settled at Green Island, near Dunedin.

Margaret’s father died in 1868 and she married farmer James Langmuir on 5 June 1878 at her mother’s house in Green Island.

They had three children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living at Purakanui, north of Dunedin.

In 1897 they sold their farm and moved to Ratanui near Owaka in South Otago.

James died in 1918 and Margaret died on 21 September 1921 – they are buried together in the Ratanui Cemetery.
