Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Margaret McLellan was born about 1846 in Wigtownshire, Scotland – the daughter of William McLellan, a shoemaker, and Catherine Templeton.
She married joiner James Mackie about 1870 and they had, at least, five children before the family emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1880s.
They had a further two children after their arrival and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living in Water St, Maori Hill in Dunedin.
James died in 1919 and Margaret died on 11 August 1925 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
