Margaret Menzies was born in about 1842. She married John Marks, a carter, in New Zealand in 1870.

They had eight children, and when she signed the suffrage petition Margaret was living in Richardson St, St Kilda, Dunedin.

John died at Richardson St in 1908 and is buried in the Southern Cemetery. Margaret died on 11 August 1919 at her daughter’s residence in Sockburn, Christchurch. She is buried in the St Peters Churchyard in Upper Riccarton, Christchurch.
