Margaret McDougall Campbell was born about 1843 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland – the daughter of Peter Campbell, a ships carpenter, and Catherine Campbell.
She came to New Zealand in the 1860s and she married Gavin Campbell McKnight, a grocer on 17 May 1877 in Mornington, Dunedin.
Gavin was declared insolvent in 1878 and their only child, Susannah, was born in 1879.
When Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living in McCrae St, Mornington – Margaret was working as a needlewoman and Gavin as a cordial maker.
Gavin died in 1915 and Margaret died at her home on 31 May 1931 – they are buried with their daughter in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
