Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Finlayson McKay was born about 1842. She married Daniel McLeod on 30 January 1865 in Dunedin.

They had three children and, in 1867, they were living in Oamaru.

In November 1867 a large storm along the coast caused a group of local men to go to the Oamaru jetty to watch the spectacle. Daniel was washed off the jetty by a large wave and, despite many attempts to save him, he drowned – he is buried in the Oamaru Cemetery.

After Daniel’s death subscription was 'opened' to assist the widow and orphans.

Margaret went to live in Milton and, in 1876, she had twin sons with Henry Moyes, a local bootmaker. They did not marry but Henry acknowledged his sons in his will when he died in 1910. When Margaret signed the suffrage petition she was living in Milton with her daughter Isabella. (See 104 I F McLeod)

She died at her home in Milton on 10 December 1926 and she is buried with Daniel in the Oamaru Cemetery.
