Margaret was born about 1843 in Kircaldy, Scotland.

She married Robert Mercer and they emigrated to New Zealand about 1880.

They had three children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Waikouaiti, north of Dunedin.

In the early 1900s they sold their farm property and retired to Dunedin.

Robert died at their home in 1920 and Margaret died on 2 November 1925, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
