Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Brooke was born in London in 1860 – the eldest child of James Brooke, a soldier, and Isabella Milldown.

What happened to her father is unknown as, in 1874, Margaret, along with her mother and four siblings, sailed for Otago on the Oamaru

Margaret had a daughter in 1879 and the following year she married Matthew Dickie Morton, a clerk, at Knox Church.

Margaret and Matthew had four sons and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living in Dundas St, Dunedin.

Matthew died in 1905 and Margaret died on 21 June 1925 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
