Margaret Carr Speid was born in 1831 in Chirnside, Berwickshire, Scotland. She married James Oliver in 1848 in Caithness, and had as many as twelve children. James and Margaret arrived in Dunedin in in 1855 at Port Chalmers, on the Strathmore, with five children.
A granddaughter, Agnes (Elsie) Balfour, studied at Otago and Edinburgh Medical Schools and graduated as a medical doctor in 1902. A great-grandson was Sir Brian Talboys.
Margaret died on 2 September 1895 in Hampden, North Otago and is buried in the Otepopo Cemetery.
