Margaret Dickison was born about 1854 in Scotland – the daughter of John Dickison, an agricultural labourer, and Margaret Paterson.
She came to New Zealand in 1859 on the Mariner, her father had been engaged as manager of the Dalvey Estate in South Otago. They travelled by bullock and horse teams to Te Houka in South Otago where the family stayed while Margaret’s father built a house.
She married Alexander Rodger, a labourer, on 2 June 1876 and they had seven children.
When Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Tapanui.
Margaret died on April 23 1923 and Alexander died in 1924, they are buried together in the Tapanui Cemetery.
