Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Stuppart Shiels was born on 18 April 1858 — the daughter of James Shiels, a railway pointsman, and Euphemia Taylor. (See 128 Euphemia Shiels)

The family emigrated to Otago in 1858 on the Jura.

They spent about five years living in Dunedin before they settled in Port Molyneux in South Otago and took up farming, staying on the same farm, Dean Park, all their lives.

When she signed the suffrage petition Margaret was living with her parents at Dean Park farm in Port Molyneux.

She later lived in nearby Kaka Point. She died at her niece’s house in Dunedin on 11 August 1932 & is buried in the Romahapa Cemetery.
