Margaret Walker was born on 5 February 1871 in Glasgow, Scotland – the daughter of Robert Walker, a baker, and Charlotte Cockburn. (See 341 Charlotte Walker)

She emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Parsee with her family and they settled in Southland.

Margaret married Captain William Barber, a master mariner, in 1892 and when she signed the suffrage petition they were living in Bluff.

William died in 1944 and Margaret died on 28 October 1967, they are buried with Margaret’s parents in the Bluff Cemetery.
