Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaretta Hay Young was born about 1856 in Scotland – the daughter of Duncan Young and Margaret Shaw.

She came to New Zealand as a young child and her family lived on the Otago Peninsula and in Kakanui before they settled in Oamaru where Margaretta’s father worked as night watchman at the harbour.

Margaretta married Alexander Matthew Clydesdale, a ploughman, on 22 March 1876 at her home in Oamaru and they had 11 children.

The family moved to Dunedin in 1892 and when Margaretta signed the suffrage petition they were living in John St, Caversham.

Alexander died at their daughter’s home in Dunedin in 1925 and Margaretta died at the Methodist Home at Company Bay on the Otago Peninsula on 2 April 1937.

They are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
