Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Margaret Phillips was born about 1831 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

She married, shipwright, Thomas Dagger on 6 November 1857 in Perthshire and they had two daughters before they emigrated to New Zealand.

Thomas appears to have arrived in 1862 on the “Grasmere”, probably working his passage, and Margaret arrived in 1863 with the children on the “Nelson”.

They settled in Dunedin where their next three children were born and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living in Calton, North East Valley.

They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1907.

Margaret died at their home on 11 November 1911 and Thomas died in 1913 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
