Margaret Mowat was born on 4 April 1854 in Leith, Scotland.

She came to New Zealand where she married Robert Stuart MacDonald, a printer, in 1873.

They had five children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living in Belleknowes, Dunedin.

Margaret died at her home on 8 January  1913 and Robert died in 1928 – they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
