Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.
Margaret Anderson was born about 1825 in Scotland.
She married Charles Whyte on 19 August 1848 in Perthshire and they had two children before the family sailed for Australia in the early 1850’s.
They had two children in Victoria before sailing for Otago in 1856 on the “Gil Blas”.
They had a further six children after their arrival and they settled on the Taieri Plain where they developed their farm “Sandridge” and where Margaret signed the suffrage petition.
Charles died at “Sandridge” in 1898 and Margaret died on 27 July 1912 at her daughter’s home in Dunedin – they are buried together in the East Taieri Cemetery.
