Margaret Lithgow Aitken was born in 1856 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of Robert Aitken and Margaret Finlay.
She came to Otago with her parents about 1863 and married John Christie Smith, a plumber, at Knox Church, Dunedin on 12 June 1878.
They had six children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Tay St, Roslyn, Dunedin.
When they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1928 they were living in Invercargill.
Margaret died at her daughter’s home in Invercargill on 7 September 1933 and John died in 1944.
They are buried together in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
