Biographical information provided by Briar Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:
Maria's maiden name was Vinton (sometimes spelled Vinten) and she was born in South-East England, near London to parents, James and Caroline (née Shillito). Maria married Charles Cleverley (born 1841) and they travelled together to New Zealand with their two eldest children in 1874 aboard the Tweed. A further ten children were born to the couple in New Zealand. Maria died in 1911.
