Biographical information provided by Helen Smith for the He Tohu exhibition:

Maria Dixon was born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1861, the daughter of Edward Dixon.

She married Metcalfe Hare, a shipwright, in Kaeo in 1883. The couple converted to 7th Day Adventism in 1885. In 1895 they went to Australia where Metcalfe served as an elder and Maria as treasurer for the Avondale SDA Church, working to establish Avondale College and developing health foods. In 1908 the Hares immigrated to the USA where they continued to work for the SDA Church, with sons Milton Metcalfe Hare (1884-1958) and Robert Amiel Hare (1890-1965) becoming SDA doctors. Maria died in 1937 in Los Angeles, California.

Probably the sister-in-law of Judith Ann Hare
