Maria Thompson was born in New Zealand in 1857 – the daughter of William Thompson and Sarah Cox.
She married George Holland, an engine driver, on 4 March 1877 at St James’s church in Cust, Canterbury.
They had eight children and when Maria signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Rankeilor St, South Dunedin.
They later moved to Maori Hill where Maria died on 12 June 1918 – she is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
George died later that year in November – he is buried in the Waitati Cemetery.
