Maria Lane was born in 1869 in Goring, Oxfordshire, England – the daughter of Charles Mathew Lane, a blacksmith, and Hannah Newell.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Corona and when Maria signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Glenore.
She married Bartholomew Kavanagh, a railway inspector, in 1895 and they had five children.
The family lived in Palmerston, Dunedin and Timaru before retiring to Auckland where Bartholomew died in 1926 – he is buried in the Hillsborough Cemetery.
Maria died on 13 March 1951 – she was cremated and her ashes interred in the Waikumete Cemetery.
