Marian Steel was born about 1842 in Ayrshire, Scotland.

She emigrated to New Zealand as an assisted immigrant on the Sevilla arriving in Bluff in 1864.

Marian married John Campbell on February 8th 1865 in the Riverton parish. They had five children, one who died in infancy.

They lived at first at Riverton before moving to Dunedin.

When Marian signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Grosvenor St, Kensington.

Marian died at her daughter’s home on September 7th 1916 and John died in 1927. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
