Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Marion Taylor Docherty was born on August 7th 1837 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, the eldest child of John Docherty, a carter, and Helen Liddell.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1858 on the Palmyra.

Marion’s mother died on the voyage, and her father died in 1861 when a cart he was riding on fell on him.

Marion married William Arnott Chapman on January 21st 1859 in the Green Island parish. They do not appear to have had any children.

When Marion signed the suffrage petition they were living in Palmerston in North Otago.

William died in 1903 in Palmerston, and Marion died on May 13th 1923 in Dunedin. They are buried together in the Palmerston Cemetery.
