Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Marion Holliday was born about 1847 in Scotland.

She emigrated to New Zealand where she married James Kershaw Hardy, a widower with one son, in 1865.

James was an engineer and they appear to have left New Zealand soon after their marriage as their eldest son was born in Valparaiso, Chile in 1866. They had one more son before they returned to New Zealand in the early 1870s and settled in Dunedin.

A further seven children were born in Dunedin, the youngest died in infancy and when Marion signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Macandrew Rd, South Dunedin.

James died in 1925 and Marion died at her home on 5 June 1933 – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
