Previously thought to be 100 Marion Penneyend.
Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Marion Ellen Aitkins was born in Falkirk, Selkirkshire, Scotland.
She came to New Zealand and married Charles John Penneycud, a painter and decorator, on 30 June 1871 in Timaru.
Marion and Charles lived in Temuka, South Canterbury where, in 1874, Marion was mentioned in the newspaper as helping with catering at the Good Hope Lodge soirée and ball.
In 1875 a five-week-old baby by the name of Pennycud was buried in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin – this child does not appear in the birth or death records but may have been Marion’s child as, in 1877 Charles was living in Dunedin and was charged with forging several cheques.
He was sentenced to 12 months hard labour.
By 1885 the couple had moved to Tapanui in South Otago where Marion signed the suffrage petition.
Charles died in Tapanui in 1893 and Marion married Charles Smith in 1899 - after this the trail goes cold!
