Marion Steven was born on 22 May 1860 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland – the daughter of Thomas Steven, a tailor, and Agnes Wilson.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in the 1860s and they settled in Dunedin.
Marion married Robert Smith, a storeman, on 3 August 1877 – they had no children.
When Marion signed the suffrage petition they were living either near or with her parents in Reid Rd, South Dunedin.
Robert died in 1929 and Marion died on 23 July 1954, they are buried with her parents in the Southern Cemetery.
