Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Martha Osborne was born in 1854 in Thetford, Suffolk – the daughter of James Osborne, a model maker, and Elizabeth Snelling.
She married Alfred Carter Broad, a brushmaker, in 1876 and they had two daughters.
In February 1880 they arrived in Otago on the Coramandel.
The family settled in Dunedin and had a further nine children.
When Martha signed the suffrage petition they were living above the family’s brushware factory in St Andrew Street.
Shortly after this they moved to their new home, 'Willard' in Cosy Dell Road.
Martha died there on 12 July 1923 and Alfred died in 1927, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
