Martha Bruce was born on 26 September 1864 in Kilean and Kilchenzie, Argyllshire, Scotland. She was the daughter of Neil Bruce and Martha Sheddan.
The Bruce family arrived in Otago on the Vicksburg in September 1867 and farmed in the Waitahuna area of Otago.
In 1893 Martha was living in Bathgate St, Dunedin working as a dressmaker. Also living in Bathgate St were Martha's sisters Jeanie and Jessie Bruce and her sister Mary Bartlman with her husband Peter.
Martha died at Waitahuna on 2 February 1944 and is buried in the Waitahuna Cemetery.
