Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Martha Maude Davies/Davis was born about 1858 in Birmingham, England – the daughter of William Davis, a gunsmith, and Emma Hunt. (See 40 Emma Whiting)
Her mother married Isaac Whiting in 1875 and soon after the family emigrated to Otago and settled in Dunedin.
When Martha signed the suffrage petition she was living with her mother and stepfather in Caversham Rise working as a dressmaker.
Martha married Walter Hughes, a farmer, in 1901.
She appears to have died in Dunedin Hospital on 27 November 1915 although the death records show a 10 year discrepancy in her age.
