Biographical information provided by Peter Gerrie for the He Tohu exhibition:

Martha was was born around 1826 and married Edward Hines on 29 October 1850 at St Georges Church, Hobart, Tasmania. They both took part in the Australian gold rushes before coming to Whanganui in 1865, where they hurriedly joined the gold rush that followed the Gabriel’s Gully find. They returned to live in Whanganui in 1876. Martha died on 4 May 1911 at her home on Taupo Quay, aged 85. Edward survived her, passing away on 19 January 1920, aged 95.
