Martha Suttey was born in 1853 in Marylebone, London – the daughter of Thomas Suttey, a brass finisher, and Emma Wood.
She married Joseph Hucker, a German cabinetmaker, in Pancras, London in 1873.
Martha & Joseph emigrated to Otago in 1876 on the Carona and settled in Dunedin.
They had six children – Joseph was declared insolvent in 1881 but began trading again once the bankruptcy was discharged.
When Martha signed the suffrage petition the family were living in St Andrew Street, Dunedin.
Joseph died at his home in 1895, aged 45.
Martha died at her daughter’s home in Fairfield on 13 August 1933, she is buried with Joseph in the Northern Cemetery.
