Martha Kimpton Norman was born about 1832 in Hertfordshire, England – the daughter of Daniel Norman, a publican, and Martha Kimpton.
She married widower and hatter, Thomas Knott on 4 December 1875 in the Stevenage parish church.
Sometime after 1881 they emigrated to New Zealand and when Martha signed the suffrage petiton they were living in Forth St, Dunedin.
Thomas died at their home in 1904 – he is buried in the Northern Cemetery.
Martha left for a trip to England in 1912 – she died in Luton, Bedfordshire on 10 March 1920, her place of burial is unknown.
