Martha Wyllie Smith was born on 31 March 1863 in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland – the daughter of Robert Smith and Margaret Dunlop.

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family later that year on the City of Dunedin and they settled in Southland.

Martha married builder Alfred Latham on 22 August 1883 at Park Hill, Waikaka.

They had five children and when Martha signed the suffrage petition they were living at East Gore.

Alfred died in 1938 and Martha died at her home on 5 March 1948 – they are buried together in the Gore Cemetery.
