Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Martha was born about 1842 in Ireland and she arrived in New Zealand about 1880, probably with her husband Robert Smyth.

When Martha signed the suffrage petition they were living in Lancefield St, Caversham in Dunedin and Robert was working as a labourer.

Martha died at her home on 7 May 1912 – she is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.

Robert remarried in 1914 and moved to Oamaru where he died in 1923 – he is buried with his second wife in the Old Oamaru Cemetery.
