Mary Galloway Aitken was born about 1859 in New Zealand – the daughter of James Allison Aitken, a farmer, and Isabella Galbraith.

Mary grew up on the family farm on the Taieri Plain, south of Dunedin.

She did not marry and when she signed the suffrage petition Mary was living at Mosgiel.

She died on 23 February 1950 in Dunedin and is buried in the family grave in the East Taieri Cemetery.
