Mary Rule was born about 1830 in Lancashire, England.
She married John Dawson Tate, a furniture broker, in Whitehaven, Cumberland in 1863.
She came to New Zealand in the mid-1870s - what happened to John is unclear.
Mary married Thomas Aldridge, a widower, in 1886 and when she signed the suffrage petition they were living in Greymouth.
Thomas died in June 1898 and Mary died later that year on 29 November – they are both buried in the Karoro Cemetery, Greymouth.
