Mary Ann Chapman was born on 1 February 1835 in England.
She married Edward Bateson, a miner, in 1880 in New Zealand.
They did not have any children and when Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Waikaia in Southland and Mary was working as a dressmaker.
She died at her home on 10 May 1908, she 'was very highly esteemed and respected...Mrs Bateson used to make bread and sell it to the miners, the oven being cut in the clay bank and fired with Manuka, which was very plentiful about the district in those days'.
Edward died in 1915, they are buried together in the Waikaia Cemetery.
