Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Mary Ann Beal was born in 1860 in Waikouaiti – the daughter of Joseph Beal, a publican, and Mary Ann Kenward.
She married William Everest, a clerk, on 27 January 1877 in the Waikouaiti parish and they had 12 children, one who died in infancy and two who died during the First World War.
The family lived, at first, in Hampden before moving to Shag Point in 1888 where Mary signed the suffrage petition and William worked as the secretary of the Allendale Coal Company.
About 1900 the family moved to Dunedin where Mary died on 12 September 1919 and William died in 1921.
They are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
