Mary Ann Mentiplay (nee Hay) was born on 30 March 1819 in Inverkeithing, Fife, Scotland to Janet Nimmo Hay and William Hay. She was the wife of Scottish engineer James Mentiplay, who established Invercargill’s first flour mill with future Invercargill Mayor, Thomas Pratt. James died of a heart attack in 1893. Mary Ann was highly regarded and well known in the community on account of her charity work. She died in April 1906.
