Mary Ann Scoones was born at sea in 1855, probably sailing between Australia and Otago – the daughter of George Scoones, a master mariner, and Mary Ann Irwin. (See 148 M Scoones)
She grew up in Port Chalmers before moving to Dunedin in the 1880’s with her family.
She married John Metcalf on 16 September 1884 at the Trinity Wesleyan Church in Dunedin.
They do not appear to have had any children and what happened to John is a mystery.
By 1891 Mary was running a fancy goods shop in George St, Dunedin where she signed the suffrage petition.
She died on 30 January 1939 – she is buried with her parents in the Northern Cemetery.
