Mary Ann Hellier was born about 1858 in Devonshire, England.
She emigrated to New Zealand where she married William Shave in 1882.
They had five children and they lived in Gore where Mary signed the suffrage petition.
In 1919 William drowned while cleaning the town reservoir.
Mary remained in Gore where she died on 9 November 1921 – they are buried together in the Gore Cemetery.
